Formed by the merger of two regional health systems, Luminis Health aimed to consolidate its fragmented web presence into a single platform and significantly increase online scheduling. A core objective was to create a more inclusive, accessible, and modern digital experience that reduced barriers to care and reflected the organization’s new identity.

This strategic redesign and Epic integration provided an opportunity to better serve consumer preferences and enhance operational efficiency.

User Experience Research

Modea’s approach to product strategy included over 25 stakeholder interviews, 1:1 customer interviews, and moderated usability testing with 30 participants. Additional web surveys, heuristic reviews, competitive analysis, and data analysis provided insight into user behavior and care journeys.

This comprehensive research confirmed the need for a comforting, consumer-centric digital experience that supported all Luminis customers and simplified access to care.

Designing an Innovative Healthcare Website 

Together, Luminis Health and Modea planned a new content strategy, prioritized a firm accessibility standard across the site, and implemented innovative digital solutions, such as:

The new site is patient-centric unlike anything offered by Luminis Health’s local or regional competitors. Luminis did not settle with the traditional search to find a doctor experience, instead, our consumer-centric approach enables consumers to directly schedule an appointment.

Product Design – Design System Development

Modea and Luminis Health collaborated to consolidate content from 20 sites into one streamlined experience. Based on research insights, Modea developed an atomic design system and intuitive navigation framework focused on user needs rather than organizational structure. Each page was optimized as a landing page with clear calls to action, resulting in over 40% organic search attribution. Prioritizing scheduling as a core feature, the team designed service pages as high-performing landing pages that reduce the journey from search to scheduling down to just three clicks.

Technical Implementation

Modea’s technical implementation leveraged custom APIs and deep Epic MyChart integrations to embed self-scheduling and personalized dashboards directly into the Luminis Health website. Built on Acquia/Drupal, the site provides a robust, scalable foundation for content management and future integrations.

To further support a modern, consumer-grade experience, Modea developed a custom-branded chatbot and integrated provider tools for direct scheduling from profiles. Accessibility was prioritized throughout development, ensuring compliance with WCAG AA standards and equal usability for Spanish-speaking visitors.
