Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System has served the people of upstate South Carolina for 100 years. It includes several medical centers, physician practices, and long-term care facilities, as well as the flagship Spartanburg Medical Center, a research and teaching hospital.

They came to Modea for help when they decided not to renew their contract with their current provider, who held their site on a proprietary CMS.

Spartanburg Regional was on the clock: They only had a year before their current CMS was sunset, causing them to lose their entire website. Since they would be migrating to a new CMS, it was an opportunity to rethink the design and functionality of their digital experience.

Analytics, UX Discovery, and CMS Selection

Diving into Spartanburg Regional’s analytics data, we discovered that more than 70% of users viewed the site on a mobile device. This meant it would be essential to take a mobile-first approach to the design.

Through UX audits and talking with stakeholders, we identified some gaps and opportunities. For example, Spartanburg Regional wanted to create a more customized experience for returning visitors, which led us to explore some personalization.

Our team also helped guide them to the CMS and tech stack solution that would work best for them. Since we are an Acquia partner, we’re able to help them choose the appropriate plan and make sure all third-party technologies would integrate.

Mobile-First, Personalized Healthcare Website Design

Our design team created a clean, bold design with a guided search that defaults to the categories most commonly being searched. It also surfaces recently visited services or features.

We prioritized CTAs and optimized the experience for the primary audience (patients) while making sure that other audiences, such as physicians or caregivers, had an equally seamless experience.

Development Highlights

Our engineering team worked quickly and efficiently to build a new, mobile-first site in just a matter of months, ensuring that Spartanburg Regional wouldn’t lose their content or experience any lapse in their digital presence.

  • Built the site in Drupal 8 then migrated to Drupal 9.
  • Used Acquia as a hosting partner to unlock new features as needed over time. Used Solr to build a faster, better search experience on the site.
  • Integrated with Clockwise.MD (an existing vendor) to display urgent care wait times.
  • Moved to a third-party vendor for events EventBrite, because events represented a growing area for the healthcare system. Also helped integrate with Authorize, for revenue generating events.
  • Helped with content migration.

Modea designed and built the new digital experience at spartanburgregional.com within 9 months. And have continued to make improvements and design new pages, following the insights from analytics and user data.

As Spartanburg Regional’s maintenance provider, we ensure their site stays up-to-date, secure, and never again at the mercy of a ticking clock.
